About Z

Hi, my name is Scott Zeilenga.

I grew up in the top-left corner of Iowa. After going to college in Sioux City, Iowa I migrated to Rhode Island for about 8 years. I had a great experience there and learned a lot, but something in me wanted to end up back where I started. Home was calling. I got a short term job at a lumber yard, bought a beat up old minivan and jumped on the road. Two days later, after nearly 27 hours on the road I arrived back at square one.

But that was over 2 years ago.  Life has changed a lot compared to my Rhode Island days. I met and married my amazing wonderful wife, Tiffany. My minivan bit the dust and I sold it as scrap for 100 dollars. Then my father-in-law was nice enough to give us his ‘91 Explorer and so now I poke around town in that. We bought our first house and have spent many house renovating it. It is small and in need of lots of TLC, but we call it home. There is a baby Z on the way, but that is a story for a later time.

Even though I work full time at a residential facility for disabled individuals, my heart is in the creative fields. Graphic design and photography is essentially self taught, although I did go to college for a year and a half to hone the design part of it. I think college taught me the basics and I added photography and typography on my own. I carry my camera (a Kodak Z series. Fitting huh?) everywhere I go. It helps me see the world through graphic eyes and contributes to all my projects. I am always taking pictures of something. It really creates a base for my design work. I have kind of a minimal, elemental, photography-based design style. It might not be the most amazing design work ever, but I can hold my own in the industry. I have a portfolio if you want to see it: Behold Studios.

I also write music. I got into electronica and techno when I was in highschool and have been writing/composing it ever since. I have 2 albums out on a little Holland-based chillout label called Cardamar. I dabble in drum&bass too. Lately though I have combined music skills with a fellow producer and we formed the ambient experimental band, faux.non. We are hoping to draw some sort of label attention this summer. Maybe even get on Kranky or Touch. We will see, but for now we are content writing quality tunes that we enjoy listening to.

Oh yeah, I am a Christian. A creationist too (more on that here). You probably have a problem with that, but the more I study it, the more I am convinced it is the truth.

Mainly my days are packed full of everything that makes life good : words, pictures, music, love and truth. It is enough to make me smile. You usually will find me doing just that.
