About

Hi, my name is Scott Zeilenga. Mr Z to most of my readers. Z to everyone else.

And this is my blog. It is an extension of the Mr Z’s projects pages on Twitter and Facebook. While both of those pages will be far more active, and are for links, blurbs and updates, this space is for bigger projects and bigger themes and expounding upon them. So, one post may be on framing in a wall or designing and building a piece of furniture, while another post may be on volunteering and service or sustainability and innovation. Sometimes I will post a picture and describe the process I used to fix something. Other times I will just post thoughts on the joys of being a craftsman.

Hands On with Mr Z

Another extension of this blog and my social media sites (or maybe more accurately, the reason for them) is my weekly newspaper column called “Hands On with Mr Z”. Each week’s 380 words are on subject matter similar to what appears here on this blog. I write about my current projects, home improvement, furniture design, tools, invention, volunteering, work and craftsmanship. Then I wrap it up with a short section at the end called “Z’s work notes” where I give a little project advice in the form of tips, tricks or process suggestions. Look for it in you local newspaper.

About Mr Z.

Hi. I am a 30-something husband of a lovely wife, father of a wonderful toddler and homeowner of a little bungalow style home in top left Iowa. When I am not waist deep in project work, woodworking or writing, I play hand drums and percussion as well as take photographs and dabble in fine art and graphics. When I have free time you can find my head in a book - mostly nonfiction, but occasionally I get lost in a good detective novel. Oh, and I am a Christian and strive to glorify God in all that I do.
